Be still and know…
“Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth!” - Psalm 46:10
I remember when my grandfather was alive one of my favourite things to do when visiting him was to just sit with him without saying a word. My grandfather was a man of godly wisdom and presence that oftentimes I found myself just being in awe of him, the peace that surrounded him, and the wisdom that flowed so freely from him. So, I would walk into the room where he was, take a seat next to him and just sit. Minutes would go by, and no words would pass between us. But let me tell you when they did, the conversations were so profound and full of richness. It’s as if I would just sit with him not expecting anything but just experiencing the joy of being in his presence.
After observing my “sitting in silence” behaviour a few times, I remember my mother saying to me that I should talk with my grandfather more, to which I responded “I just love being in granddaddy’s presence. I feel like there’s so much wisdom that passes from him to me without us saying anything. I don’t have an agenda; I just want to BE with him!” I told my grandfather about my conversation with my mom, and he just chuckled and said to me, “I understand and that’s why I like to just sit with you too. There’s more being said between us in what others perceive as our silence. I love your presence just as you enjoy mine so never stop!’
This makes me think about today’s meditation and the encouragement to let go of the rules and just sit as a child in the presence of our Father without the expectation of anything happening. How often do we seek the Lord with a long list of things to talk about? How often do we expect our time with him to “look like” something specific only to be left with disappointment or discouragement when it doesn’t happen the way we imagined? But what if we just laid aside our agendas and expectations and just came to the Lord to be with him and that’s it? God loves being in our presence too and passionately longs for us to come close.
In today’s meditation from our friends at the Christ-Centered Tribe, we are encouraged to “Let go of the doing, and just be!” So, take 10 minutes to be still with God without any agendas and allow his presence to lead the journey. Click here to watch!
